Spinal Manipulative Therapy

Physiotherapist Doing Manipulation To Man Patient. Osteopathy.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy  (SMT) or chiropractic adjustments consist of gentle contacts on various joints of the body followed by gentle thrusts to create motion at specific joints and facilitate its proper movement. Port Coquitlam chiropractor, Dr. Sabbaghan, can provide specific and gentle adjustments to the spine, hips, knees, shoulders and others joints in the body, restoring proper motion at those joints; reduce pain and most importantly allow for improved function to prevent future injury.

SMT has been extensively studies and it is one of the most effective manual therapy techniques for treatment of neck pain, back pain, headaches and other biomechanically driven conditions. SMT is safe and without any major side effects. During the adjustment, the patients may hear an audible pop which is the sound of gas bubbles releasing from the joints as a result of the adjustment. However, hearing the audible sound does not differentiate a good vs. a poor adjustment. Effectiveness of an adjustment is multifactorial and will highly depend on that patient’s physical and mental readiness to receive an adjustment. For example, in very acute conditions, the body may not be ready to accept an adjustment, in which the doctor will utilize other modalities to reduce pain and save the manipulation for a later visit where the body may be in a more calmed state.

Port Coquitlam chiropractor, Dr. Sabbaghan is a full body ART certified practitioner. She combines ART driven examinations and treatments using her hands to evaluate for texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Consequently, an ART protocol consists of specific directed pressures in specific vectors, combined with patient directed movements to treat a particular soft tissue structure.
