• Acupuncture for Sciatica

Are you sure you have sciatica?

You may have been told by your physician or Dr. Google that you have sciatica after telling them about your symptoms of pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower back, buttock, and down the leg. They probably have suspected that you may have a herniated or slipped disc, narrowing of the spinal canal, or degenerative disc disease and you should undergo a surgery.

If you have not been officially diagnosed with disc disease followed after CT scan, MRI, or X-Ray, it most likely is not sciatica because disc disease is the underlying etiology in LESS THAN FIVE PERCENT of patients with back pain.

Then what are these symptoms?

It’s most likely just a simple peripheral nerve entrapments from tightened muscle, fascia, and ligaments from sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercising.

Can acupuncture help?

It is an effective modality to treat these symptoms. Acupuncture will remove the adhesion and scar tissues that entrap the nerves that induces such symptoms. You can consider it a super micro-surgery that leaves no scar tissue behind.

Furthermore, acupuncture can also help with disc diseases by inducing micro-damage to the affected location of disease and help promote the body to heal itself.

In most cases, it only takes about three to four sessions for the patients to feel about 70% to 80% improvement. Also, there are reports about patients feeling better with just one session.

Why choose acupuncture?

There are many cases that people experience side effects from unnecessary surgery but acupuncture rarely leave any side effects other than mild ache or soreness. If a foreign object that is thicker than 3 cm is to penetrate through the skin, it will leave a scar but acupuncture needles are usually less than .35 mm thick.
