SPORTS MEDICINE ACUPUNCTURE®

Many people today are seeking alternative approaches to sport injuries, work injuries and injuries related to motor vehicle accidents. Sports medicine acupuncture® can be a great tool to get you back on your feet quickly and efficiently. If you have never experienced acupuncture, now is the perfect time to give it a try!

WHAT IS SPORTS MEDICINE ACUPUNCTURE® AND HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?

Ian Dunsmuir our sports medicine acupuncture® incorporates principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western Sports Medicine to view the patient’s injury from a truly integrated perspective.

The goal of sports medicine acupuncture® is to treat the injury by re-establishing normal muscle balance and to address the complete health and wellness of the individual. One of the key components in sports medicine acupuncture® is the motor point.  The motor point is defined as the most electrically excitable area of the muscle and represents the greatest concentration of nerve endings. Acupuncture can influence nerves thereby helping to reset the dysfunctional muscle that is causing problems.  Acupuncture is another way to stay on top of your body and its wellbeing as you live your life.  Sports medicine acupuncture® can also help with injuries from motor vehicle accidents and the work place.   Acupuncture treatments can not only help speed the recovery of a current injury but can also help prevent future injuries such as those due to overuse.  If you do become injured, acupuncture can help your body to heal and deal with the injury.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING A SPORTS MEDICINE ACUPUNCTURE® ASSESSMENT?

The comprehensive evaluation of your injury will include past and present history from both a western and acupuncture perspective.  The assessment involves palpation, range of motion and manual muscle testing as well as relevant functional orthopedic tests.  TCM tongue and pulse can also be utilized.  This information is organized into a treatment plan.  Then fine hair-like sterile needles are placed at specific motor points and acupuncture points in the body.  This safe and painless insertion of the needles can help to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling, increase blood supply to the injured area and increase healing speed.  Overall, the treatments can improve health and quality of life.

DOES IT HURT?

This is a very common question.  Some people envision the needles to be big like a needle when you give blood.  But the needles are fine and so most of the time they are hardly noticed.  In fact, usually people are relaxed during a treatment and feel relaxed for the rest of the day.  It is not painful.   Most people feel mild tingling, slight numbness, dull achy sensations or nothing at all.

Ian Dunsmuir’s commitment to you is that he will do his utmost to get you back to your preferred lifestyle as quickly as possible.
